Alternative Feeds for Beef Cows and Stockers
نویسنده
چکیده
40 percent of annual production costs in typical cow/calf operations. These costs also have a dramatic impact on cost per unit of gain in stocker operations. Consequently, cattle producers must continually evaluate new methods to make efficient use of available resources while optimizing animal performance and minimizing supplementation costs. Often, when cattle graze marginal to low quality forages, supplemental protein or energy is required to enhance either forage use or animal performance. Depending on the cost of more traditional feedstuffs, alternative feeds often provide an opportunity to reduce the cost of supplementation while maintaining or improving animal performance. This guide provides cow/calf and stocker operators with information on nutrition and other considerations for the use of several alternative feeds available in the Midwest.

Economic impact of stable flies (Diptera: Muscidae) on dairy and beef cattle production.
Stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), are among the most damaging arthropod pests of cattle worldwide. The last estimate of their economic impact on United States cattle production was published 20 yr ago and placed losses at $608 million. Subsequently, several studies of effects of stable flies on beef cattle weight gain and feed efficiency have been published, and stable flies have become i...
متن کاملA beef herd model for simulating feed intake, animal performance, and manure excretion in farm systems.
A beef herd submodel was created for integration with other farm components to form a whole-farm model capable of simulating a wide range of beef production systems. This herd submodel determined the best available feed or feed mix to meet the fiber, energy, and protein requirements for each of up to six animal groups on the farm. The groups comprised any combination of cows, nursing calves, yo...
متن کاملUpgrading plant amino acids through cattle to improve the nutritional value for humans: effects of different production systems.
Efficiency in animal protein production can be defined in different ways, for example the amount of human-digestible essential amino acids (HDEAA) in the feed ration relative to the amount of HDEAA in the animal products. Cattle production systems are characterised by great diversity and a wide variety of feeds and feed ration compositions, due to ruminants' ability to digest fibrous materials ...
متن کاملAlternative Feeds for Beef Cattle
As a beef cattle nutritionist, two things have been drilled into to me from early on: 1) the cheapest way to feed the cow is to let her “harvest” her own feed by grazing, and 2) corn is the cheapest source of energy for fed cattle. However, fluctuations in corn and land prices in more recent years have raised questions regarding the truth in these old adages. The objectives of these proceeding ...
متن کاملLimit-feeding corn as an alternative to hay for gestating beef cows.
Three experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of limit-feeding corn-based diets as an alternative to hay for beef cows in gestation and early lactation. Seventy or 71 mature, pregnant Simmental crossbred cows (average weight = 589 +/- 10 kg) were used in each trial. Each of 29 or 30 cows was fed approximately 5 kg of whole shelled corn, 1.2 kg of a pelletted supplement, and 1 kg of...
